From Ushuaia we proceed south across the Drake Passage to the South Shetland Islands and then to the north of the Antarctic Peninsula. Sailing through the Antarctic Sound, where tabular icebergs drifting out of the Weddell Sea are frequently seen, around Dundee Island, named for the Scottish whalers, we enter the Weddell Sea discovered by James Weddell in 1822. From Ushuaia we proceed south across the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula. Sailing south to the penguin rookeries at Pleneau, and on to visit Petermann Island, the most southerly site for Gentoo Penguins, we have a good chance of seeing Minke Whales and Leopard Seals. South, beyond the Polar Circle, we sail into in the beautiful Crystal Sound, full of glaciers flowing between the high mountains.
