ARGENTINA: TRELEW
Trelew is a strategic road network since the routes that lead to Puerto Madryn, Rawson, Gaiman and other important centres converge in this city. It has an airport that links it with Buenos Aires, 1643 km away, by 2-hour direct flights. The Museo Paleontologico Edigio Feruglio (Paleontological Museum Egidio Feruglio) exhibits fossilized fauna and flora of Patagonia and some pieces found in the region. There is a paleontological park on the banks of Chubut River, 25 km from Trelew. Here, you can walk along a one-kilometre path and, led by the expert guides of the region, observe the history of the last 40 million years. Some of the pieces are unique in the world due to their type and diversity.
20 km from Trelew city is Rawson, founded in 1865 by the Welsh settlers that disembarked in Golfo Nuevo. Located on the Atlantic Ocean coast, it is an important port and the administrative capital of Chubut province. From Rawson, it is possible to visit Playa Union, a picturesque beach with golden sand named after an English boat that shipwrecked on its coast.
16 km from Trelew city is Gaiman, Welsh colony located on the banks of Chubut River, in the middle of the inferior valley, Famous for its Welsh-style constructions of the 19"' century, you can enjoy a delicious Welsh tea or visit the chapels and farms in this area. One of the most important tourist centres of the area is Puerto Madryn.
From the coast to the west, 120 km into the Patagonian plateau from Trelew city, there is a splendid reservoir in a narrow red-rock passage that leads to the Dique Florentino Ameghino dam that provides water and energy to Puerto Madryn and Comodoro Rivadavia and that, at the same time, is an important tourist attraction. The canyon walls stand at a height of 40 m. above the level of the lake and of the green vegetation that surrounds it. The purpose of this dam was to eliminate the danger of the flood that periodically damaged the crops and works of a large part of the inferior Valley
