The Kingdom of Belgium is a federal state made up of three regions (Flanders in the North, the Walloon provinces in the South and the Brussels Metropolitan Region with Brussels capital in the
center). There are three communities (Dutch-speaking,
French-speaking and German-speaking). In addition to their mother tongue, many Belgians often
speak one or both national languages. English speaking tourists are unlikely to have difficulty making themselves understood in their own language. In each of the
smaller cities, you will find Gothic town- halls and gabled guild-houses, cathedrals and
carillon bells, antique markets and rich museums, superb restaurants and fun pubs, jazz
and medieval pageantry. Diamonds are Belgium's
best-known shopping lure; many shops in Antwerp's diamond district welcome browsers. Lace,
chocolates, antiques, linens, pewter and copperware are other popular items. The Boulevard
de Waterloo is lined with fashion shops. Belgium produces more than 300
varieties of beer, excellent cheeses and sublime pastries and chocolates. The frites and
waffles are seldom more than an enticing aroma away. Discover the fields of the Battle of Waterloo or the site of the Mine of
Bldgny. Visit Redu, the book village, or the Space Center. Bicycles can be rented at dozens of railway stations. A bonus for subway riders in
Brussels is the artwork at many stations.
Flanders
- Flanders can boast of a range of attractive and lively art towns with a unique, rich and varied cultural and historic national heritage. These towns are only a stones' throw away from each other. This makes a trip through Flanders even more interesting. To name only a few:
Bruges, Ghent, Leuven, Mechelen, Brussels. But Flanders has many more art towns, smaller but certainly worthwhile inserting in your
program.
Wallonia
- In Wallonia, where nature and culture go hand in hand, the charms of the past are connected with the contemporary attractions: the prestigious castles of
Rixensart, Modave, Veves, Corroy and Beloeil, the charming towns of
Nivelles, Tournai, Mons, Namur, Huy and Liege.
Brussels
- Brussels is in many respects the country's economic, political and cultural
center. The capital of Flanders and Belgium, Brussels continues to grow each day as the capital of Europe. The city can pride itself on having the world's most beautiful market square as well as a fascinating and varied architecture, ranging from Gothic, classicism and renaissance to art nouveau and art
deco. The numerous museums offer a diverse and unique range of art collections.
Brussels is also synonymous with recreation. Luxurious shops and modern art galleries alternate with
colorful flower markets and popular flea markets. The sunny terraces and peculiar pubs offering an unequalled range of Belgian beer will treat you to some memorable moments. Countless quality restaurants with food from the old days on the menu, turn Brussels into one of the world's most delicious
cities.
