  Information

The ancient Romans built canals more than 2000 years ago and canal transportation progressed well into the 20th Century when barges were the most important means of freight transport throughout most of Western Europe. After the invention or railroad, canal shipping nearly died out and traffic constantly declined, especially since cars were developed. Today, canals have returned to play a significant role as recreational waterways and can be fully enjoyed with a barge cruise. Here, everything is ready for you: sleeping quarters, meals, a crew to run the barge, local excursions when the barge stops and passengers who become restless can often jog or bicycle along the towpath as the barge slowly progresses to the next village. Hotel barges are in many cases luxury floating hotels with private cabins, comfortable lounges and enjoyable sundecks, perfect for viewing the passing scenery. In addition, excellent regional cuisine and fine wines are served daily to enhance the overall cruising experience. Expect to be pampered as you glide through ancient villages with guided excursions to historic chateaux, renowned vineyards and colorful local markets. Your Floating Hotel is furnished with modern amenities from air conditioning to even jacuzzis, saunas or a small fitness studio.

Sit back and relax or take part in one of the many historical excursions offered daily. Each barge has it's own personality, catering to your specific interests, such as walking, biking, golfing, wine tasting or just simply relaxing. Step back in time and spend a relaxing week or two aboard a modern, purpose-built self-drive craft, designed to provide for your every need. Barge cruising is a wonderful way to capture the true essence of rural Europe with new and exciting destinations each day.

A day barging.....

Each morning, your barge gets underway for the day's cruise. As it navigates the locks, it is easy to step directly ashore for a leisurely stroll. If you feel adventurous, take one of the barge's bicycles to explore the quiet lanes and quaint villages nearby. Or, simply relax on the sundeck and watch the lovely countryside slowly unfold before you.

During the day, you are invited to join an excursion via private motorcoach to a nearby point of special interest. Each itinerary has been selected to include a varied sampling of the region: romantic castles, historic towns, and renowned vineyards for wine tasting. At certain châteaux and estates, your tour will be conducted by the owner, whose family has been in residence for generations.

In the evening, you will be welcomed at your table by food worth of the most prestigious restaurants. Your Captain will also arrange for you to enjoy special local events which occur during your cruise, from lively farmers' markets to special parades. As an option to the cruise, you may also experience the adventure of a hot air balloon flight.

Since the same high level of quality and service can be found on each of our barges, you can select your cruise based on the itinerary you find most intriguing. Whatever your destination, you will discover a land of quiet beauty and gracious people, and gain a rare, insider's perspective of provincial Europe.
