El Calafate - Lago Argentino A La Carte - 4D/3N

El Calafate, Argentina courtesy of Tourism Board of ArgentinaEl Calafate is a nice tourist village with good hotel facilities that lies on the hillside of the plateaus that surround it. It is surrounded by small farms of vegetables and fruit trees that form the belt of the small urban center. The city is crossed by the El Calafate stream which divides the village in two. A few meters from the center of the city, a path of stones leads to the Nimes Lagoon, better known as the Birds Lagoon, with an important population of black-necked swans, flamingoes and upland goose on a fine dark sand beach. El Calafate is the National Capital of the Glaciers and the most important city of the area. The Argentino Lake and the Viedma Lake are the only lakes that, after the last glaciation of the quaternary period, are still fed by glacial water. Their particular turquoise color is due to the sediments and minerals from the mountains that remain suspended on the lake since their specific weight is lower to the water’s. This allows natural light to penetrate only to a certain depth. Both lakes are in the Los Glaciares National Park, one of the largest national parks of the country and perhaps the only truly untouched area in the southern continent, where nature is preserved intact due to the natural barrier that represents the huge steppe that precedes it. It is an area covered with ice, whose origins go back to the quaternary era when the last glaciation period took place. It was declared Monument of the World Patrimony by UNESCO. Colonies of seals play on the islets and sandbanks. A visit to these regions allows us to discover the wonders of nature in constant creation.
