Iran is the second-largest and most populous country in the Middle East and has always been Iran (Land of the Aryan or “noble people”) to Iranian people. The name Persia (from the ancient province of Persis) was given by the Greeks to the entire land from which the Achaemenid dynasty arose and is only used to specify this ancient period of time. Iran boasts one of the oldest civilizations in the world and in 559 B.C., Iranians created the first world empire which extended from Egypt and the Mediterranean to India and from the Persian Gulf to well beyond the Caspian Sea.Iran is a land of hospitality and warmness, with a rich, glorious and grand cultural heritage. Tehran, the capital, is the largest city while Mashad, Isfahan, Tabriz, and Shiraz all have populations of over one million.
