Libya
is a country of great history and breathtaking beauty.
From sun-drenched Mediterranean beaches to the immense
desert extending far into Africa, you will find
enchanting villages and cities scattered amongst
meadows, watered by magnificent oasis.
Its historical
monuments are a testimony of the great civilizations of
the past as Libya has always provided a vital link
between the eastern and western parts of the Arab world
as well as between Europe and Africa. Look at the
engravings of the Akakusand Tadrart mountains or to the
drawings in the Matchandoush caves. Visit the incredible
archaeological treasures: the Phoenician, Roman, and
Byzantine left ports in Tripoli, Sabratah and Libdah, to
name but a few, the Arabs built Islamic cities such as
Sirt, Darnah, Ghadames and Fezzan plus many others,
fortresses used by different civilizations are also
everywhere like in Gharyan, Al-Qaryat and Awinat.
The
arrival point is usually Tripoli, Libya's biggest city,
where every monument tells a story. The city has changed
little since its foundation in the first millennium
B.C., it is still a lush garden filled with olive trees,
palms, grapevines, and orange groves as well as an
historical site and a city of Islamic civilization, Arab
art and handicraft. Shopping is also great, and in the
popular markets you can buy a great variety of Libyan
handicrafts such as carpets, gold and silver jewellery,
copper and silver dishes, leather goods, and pottery.
Relax
along the two thousand kilometers of splendid beaches
and beautiful small cities each, with its typical
architecture and special characteristics. Every kind of
water-sport is practised in the resorts along the coast
and here you will also find the port of Benghazi, with
its magnificent buildings and large, open spaces.
Take
the highway east to the magnificent cities of the Green
Mountain, ancient Cyrene and beautiful Apollonia or
explore Libya's desert with its waves and waves of sand,
"the great sand sea", and its refreshing oasis where the
history, monuments and tales told by the locals make
this place unique.
