New Caledonia is as French as a Francophile could wish, with the extra sipce of a gorgeous tropical setting, and yet it remains one of the region's best kept secrets. Here you can experience traditional island life, after you reach la Brousse, the outback. Grand Terre is still partially occupied by the island's indigenous people, the Kanaks who live a traditional life, known as la coutume, involving an intricate system of tribal sharing, gift giving, ancestor worship and clan ties.
You will also find Kanak clans in the smaller islands to the north, east and south of Grand Terre: the verdant Ile des Pins, the rugged, unspoiled Loyaute Islands and the tiny Belep Islands.
