photo courtesy of Chile Tourist BoardSouth of the South, where silence reigns, is the majestic landscape of Chilean Patagonia. Patagonia is a region of vast steppe-like plains, rising in a succession of abrupt terraces about 100 meters at a time, covered with an enormous bed of almost bare vegitation. In the hollows of the plains are ponds or lakes.

Torres del Paine National Park encompasses mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers in southern Chile. The Cordillera del Paine is the centerpiece of the park. It lies in a transition area between the Magellanic subpolar forests and the Patagonian Steppes. Lady Florence Dixie and her traveling party were the first tourists to visit the area of the current national park in 1880. The park was established in 1959 as Parque Nacional de Turismo Lago Grey and it was given its present name in 1970. The park was designated as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1978.
