SKI GERMANY:  GARMISH-PARTENKIRCHEN

The picturesque twin towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen comprise one of the largest, best-organized - and certainly one of the friendliest - winter resorts in Europe. Garmisch, Germany's premier winter sports center, was the site of the 1936 Winter Olympics and Alpine skiing here still has a uniquely German flavor. Garmisch has facilities which would make even Aspen blush: this is the place where they have the ski jumping every New Year's Day, here's the majestic Zugspitze and over 4000 vertical feet of skiing, with terrain for all abilities. Add to that an incredible range of off-slope facilities, include a public swimming complex with big pool, wave machine, water slides, diving pool, sauna, solarium; an Olympic sized indoor ice rink (with five rinks to choose from) plus various theatres, concert halls, over 100 restaurants, even more shops... and on top of it for sheer scenic spectacle, Garmisch Partenkirchen simply cannot be surpassed.

Take the cogwheel train to the top of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak. Look out over the view that takes in three nations, and then pick your terrain. There are seven ski areas in Garmisch, offering slopes for every degree of experience and ability. There are nearly 200 miles of trails for all standards in the area, spreads across a dozen resorts on the delightfully named Happy Ski Card which stretches over the Austrian border. Despite the big numbers this is not 'skiing without frontiers' in quite the same way as it is at many big French ski areas, we're talking a lot of moderately sized ski areas and a bus ride between each. Still, on the way you'll pass fairy tale castles that not even Walt Disney could match. Garmisch is also the perfect resort for those who want more from a vacation than just skiing. Scores of restaurants and terraces border the slopes for sunning and relaxing. Charming Alpine villages dot the landscape. Romantic Neuschwanstein Castle is nearby to be admired. Another lovely castle, Linderhof can be reached by cross-country ski trail. And of course, the culture and gala nightlife of Munich are little more than an hour away.
