Welcome to Winter Paradise Italy! - Italians live in some of the world's most beautiful alpine estate, after all, the southern rim of the Alps is Northern Italy's back yard.
To the west are the highest mountains in Europe which reach an altitude of over 4000 meters, to the east, a unique landscape characterized by the fascinating crags and crevices of the Dolomite range, one of the most beautiful and picturesque line of mountains in the world, to the south the long range of the Apennines runs along it from end to end, so that mountains are an important presence and one of Italy's least-known delights.
Of course Courmayeur and Cervinia, Cortina and the Dolomites are well-known for their ski pistes and grandiose landscapes, but there is more to the mountains of Italy than this: for a deeper knowledge you have to leave the beaten track behind and venture into areas still untouched, amazingly, by mass tourism. Thus in Val d'Aosta you can take a cable-car up the powerful slopes of Mont Blanc or, mountain ski - often with the support of helicopters. 7
The hills of the Trentino and Veneto are no less beautiful: here the all-too-well known and extremely smart Cortina reigns supreme, so that it is unnecessary to list its beauties, just as the superb Cime di Lavaredo and the Lake Misurina are almost too well-known to need a mention, as are their fairy-tale settings.
And when you have finished skiing, remember there is still that marvellous and nearly unknown, outside the main cities, country to visit: untouched, wild places, with magnificent sweeping views; and, everywhere, churches, abbeys, castles and monasteries serving as a contrast to the wild beauties of nature, reminding the visitor of the ancient, all pervasive presence of man.
