South America skiing
As spring and summer sun melts the snow in the Northern Hemisphere, savvy skiers pack up and travel south to the great ski centers in South America where the ski season begins in mid-June and runs to October with the best conditions in July and August. Skiing in the Andes began with the building of the Trans-Andean railway from Valparaiso to Buenos Aires around the turn of the century. As no roads reached Uspallata pass, near today Portillo, all contracted workers were forced to reavch it on skis. In the 1930’s the first mountain refugios were built and soon after the continent’s first chairlift. The ski areas offer a wide range of skier services, including a range of accommodations and dining, ski rentals and lessons, snowboard parks, childcare, ice skating, and so on. Heli-skiing and guided off-piste services are available for interested parties.
