Sofia has a history that goes back thousands of years and different populations have inhabited it and added to its rich and diverse history. Today there are still monuments in Sofia, that display the city's diverse history - the castle gates and towers of Serdica along with some of the public buildings show this inheritance.

Today, Sofia is a cosmopolitan city and, like any other capital, it is the center of the country's events from political to business and cultural life, although it retains some of its historical retage with many archaeological sites and streets thousands of years old.

Shopping in Sofia is quite an experience and you will find everything from designer clothes and small antique shops to private art galleries displaying icons, modern art and jewels and shops for traditional crafts.
