Irregular in shape, Costa Rica is a small country, covering less than 20,000 square miles. At its narrowest east-west point, a mere 75 miles separate the Caribbean from the Pacific. From north to south, the country stretches 180 miles.

This tropical country dotted with mountains and volcanoes boasts a tremendous variety of flora and fauna. The vegetation ranges from lush forests to plantations - from lush jungles to verdant mountain pastures.

More than 1,000 varieties of orchids are native of the country, including the national flower: La Guaria Morada.

Animal life is also remarkably diverse and includes such endangered species as the jaguar and ocelot, a large jungle rodent called the agouti, several species of sea turtle, four types of monkeys, two species of sloth, and more than 845 species of birds.

The country's climate varies depending upon elevation, location, and season with a little change in temperature from month to month. While the coastal plains are tropical, the mountain regions tend to be cool, and the Central Plateau has a spring-like climate year round, (average daily temperature 75 F or 25 C).

December through April is the dry season, and most of the rainfall occurs from May to November - mainly in the afternoons.

Costa Rica offers many possibilities for great discoveries, adventure programs and culture visits.
