Tunisia is sun, sea and sand. Its Mediterranean coast is lined with beaches and resorts while, venturing into the interior, one finds the Islamic architecture of medieval walled cities and the Roman ruins along with dramatic sand dunes and lush palm-tree-filled oases.
Tunisia has
definitely been discovered by mass tourism, as one can see by the large number of package-tour groups popping up in every hotel, restaurant or historical site, including certain areas of the desert, where four-wheel-driving is the rage and creates mini sandstorms in the wake of each caravan.
For those wanting an authentic Sahara experience, it is fortunately still possible to travel, even by camel, in relative solitude and comfort, visiting the most pristine palm-tree-filled oases, desert treks, Islamic architecture in walled cities and Roman ruins left
unscathed by mass tourism.
